Medical Foster Home Caregiver for Veterans

The Medical Foster Home Program is an alternative to nursing home or assisted living care, where the VA partners with Caregivers in the community to provide caregiving assistance to Veterans who are no longer able to live independently and require assistance with ADLs and/or supervision. The Veteran is provided a private room in the Caregiver’s home and the Caregiver is able to set the monthly care rate depending on the Veterans needs, and is paid by the Veteran to provide room and board, 24/7 supervision, transportation to medical appointment, and meals to the Veterans residing in their home.

It is beneficial for Caregivers to have experience in caregiving, whether formally through employment or informally through caring for a family member, friend, or neighbor. Caregivers are required to complete background checks, CPR/First Aid Training, bi-annual trainings, and advocate for the Veteran through the VA Home-Based Primary Care program. Each Veteran enrolled in a Medical Foster Home, is also enrolled in the Home-Based Primary Care Program, where their medical provider, nurse, social worker, psychologist, physical therapist, and chaplain all visit with the Veteran in the home and provide support and educations to the Caregiver.

The VA Medical Foster Home Program is new to the Cheyenne VA Healthcare System. We are currently recruiting Caregivers that reside within 30 minutes of Cheyenne Wyoming, 40 miles from Loveland Colorado, and 60 miles from Sterling Colorado. The program has demonstrated success in other areas over the past 25 years and is currently active at over 150 VA Sites across the country.
