Position Description

The Director Nursing Unit provides clinical and administrative leadership for a department, market, or service line. The Director promotes safe, efficient, effective, and evidence based nursing care delivered within the scope and standards of practice. The role serves as a conduit between nurses, first line nurse leaders, and executive leadership representing and advocating for their caregivers. The Director is accountable to ensure the achievement of organization and nursing division purpose, vision, values, and objectives while stewarding the entrusted resources. Utilizes the American Nursing Association (ANA, 2010) Scope and Standards of Practice and Standards or Performance for Nurse Administrators for perform the following functions: The Director collects comprehensive data pertinent to issues, situations, and trends. Collects data in a systematic and ongoing process using appropriate evidence-based assessment techniques and instruments. Uses analytical models and problem-solving tools. The Director analyzes the assessment data to determine issues, problems, or trends. Demonstrates ability to examine and synthesize complex data. Promotes the integration of clinical, human resource, and financial data to support and enhance decision making

Derives and validates the issues. Problems, or trends using the assessment data. The Director identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the situation.

Collaborates with providers and other stakeholders in the identification of desired outcomes

Defines expectations for attaining outcomes

Develops outcomes that provide direction for continuity of culturally appropriate care

The Director develops a plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes while maintain alignment with the purpose, vision, values, and objectives of the organization.

Plans are in alignment with regulatory agencies and integrate current trends, standards, and research evidence.

Leads the design and development of multidisciplinary processes to address issues and/or achieve outcomes.

Demonstrates competency in developing business plans, construction plans, annual plans, developmental plans, and performance improvement plans.

Integrates clinical, human, and financial resources to enhance decision making processes. Considers the economic impact of the plan.

The Director coordinates and implements plans. The plan strategies foster health promotion, health teaching, and provision of educational services and resources.

Plans are implemented in a safe, timely manner utilizing system and market resources.

Utilizes evidence-based interventions specific to the problem or issues and incorporates new knowledge and strategies to initiate, lead and hard wire change.

Implements the plan using project and system management principles.

Promotes leadership in the coordination of multidisciplinary Healthcare resources for integrated delivery of care and services. Provides consultation to influence care, enhance abilities of others, and effect change.

The Director evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes.

Conducts a systematic, ongoing, and criterion-based evaluation of outcomes in relation to structure, process, and outcomes.

The evaluation process is based on appropriate research methods, evaluation tools, and metrics.

Involves and disseminates results to key stakeholders.

The Director systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, nursing leadership, and the delivery of services.

Uses creativity and innovation in nursing practice to improve care delivery and population outcomes.

Assures the presence of effective mechanisms for the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and protocols.

Uses results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in nursing practice and in the Healthcare delivery system.

Assures the development and implementation of an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of care and services delivered. Promotes Magnet or Pathways accreditation to demonstrate nursing excellence. Seeks other award or accreditation opportunities to highlight quality of care and services.

The Director attains the knowledge and competency required for proficient, evidence-based nursing and leadership practice.

Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning through self-reflection and inquiry to identify learning needs. Participates in ongoing educational activities.

The Director evaluates own nursing and leadership practice in relation to professional practice standards, best practice, and regulatory requirements.

Demonstrates respect for diversity in all interactions as reflected in such behaviors as cultural. Ethnic, and generational sensitivity.

Engages in self-evaluation of practice and obtains informal and formal feedback regarding role performance.

Participates in a peer review process.

Manages the evaluation, development, coaching, counseling, and end of employment processes for all caregivers working in the assigned department, market, or service line. · Interacts with peers to enhance own professional practice and role performance.
