Position Description
Qualifications:
1. Good physical and mental health.
2. Able to work well in a public environment.
3. Minimum of one years’ experience in Respiratory Therapy.
4. Credentialing with National Board of Respiratory Care as CRT
5. Must be licensed in Oklahoma as Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
6. Complete and participate in all in-service training for Respiratory Therapy Department.
7. Willing and able to take On Call for the Department.
8. ACLS, BLS, PALS Certified.
Classification:
Assess patients, give breathing treatments and other therapies, manage ventilator patients, assess and manage oxygen patients, perform EKG’s, and Pulmonary Function Testing.
Job Performance Standards:
1. Oxygen Therapy: set up, make rounds, evaluate care and record all oxygen equipment in use in the patient’s chart. Must be aware of the indications for use, contraindications and potential hazards for use of oxygen administration equipment.
2. Humidity Therapy: Set up, make rounds, evaluate care and record all humidity therapy equipment in use in the patient’s chart. Must be aware of the indications for use, contraindications and potential hazards for use of humidity administration equipment.
3. Treatment Therapy: set up, instruct the patient, evaluate the patient’s response to the treatment and record all treatments provided by Respiratory Therapy in patient’s chart. Must show good understanding and application for aseptic technique, patient interaction, patient evaluation and record useful clinical observations.
4. Infection control: Keep good personal and professional appearance. Maintain an organized appearance and observe all aseptic and sterile techniques in accordance with the Policy and Procedure Manual. Must demonstrate a willingness to consistently clean the area and encourage others to improve the control of infection within the Respiratory Care Service.
5. Preventative Maintenance and Quality Assurance: insure the safe and effective use of all Respiratory Care equipment and procedures. Must be able to reassemble, reset by standard protocol and trouble shoot all Respiratory equipment.
6. Sputum Collection: Provide patient instruction and sterile suction technique to remove airway secretions for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes. Must have knowledge and skill regarding all forms of artificial airways and suctioning techniques.
7. Continuous Mechanical Ventilation: establish effective application of all settings with all ventilators utilized by Respiratory Therapy. Set-up and adjust settings upon prescription, disinfect, reassemble and maintain appropriate records for all ventilators utilized by Respiratory Therapy. Understand Arterial Blood Gas values and be able to evaluate the ventilator for effective application and adjustment.
8. Pulmonary Laboratory: perform EKG, and Pulmonary function Tests in accordance with written policy and procedure. Must have the ability to evaluate the results of testing to determine if the test is valid.
9. Meetings: Must attend and participate in all mandatory hospital and department meetings for business and in-service education. Must attend at least 6 non-mandatory meetings and in-service education to improve job related knowledge and skills.
10. Serve as a role model by professional conduct. Look for ways to improve patient’s visits.
11. Other duties as directed.
Job Standard Limitation:
1. Assist Department Manager in their absence.
2. Defer decision making regarding staffing to the Department Manager or Administration in the Department Manager’s absence. Report need for overtime before it is used and get approval.
3. Perform duties of Department Manager in their absence.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged standing and walking. Must be able to assist with lifting and moving patients (approximately 100 pounds). Exposed to all patient elements, as well as hazards normally associated with patient care. Frequent bending, squatting and stooping are required. Motor coordination and manual dexterity are necessary to coordinate hands, eyes and fingers in administering treatments. Must have hearing acuity to determine monitor alarms and telephones. Visual acuity necessary for preparation of medications, charting, determining orders, etc… Must be able to competently handle life threatening and other emergency situations.
