Job Summary and Qualifications

The primary purpose of the Regulatory and Accreditation Services Department is
to promote safe, high quality and effective patient care through maintaining
accreditation, certification and licensure compliance of all facilities. HCA
Healthcare clinical strategies and regulatory compliance are foundational to
the work of the department The Director, Regulatory & Accreditation (Engineer)
role has extensive knowledge of National Fire Protection Agency’s (NFPA)
codes, as well as physical and mechanical systems present in acute care
hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and other freestanding/ambulatory
healthcare occupancies, to include HVAC systems, chiller plants, steam plants,
medical gas systems, building automation systems, etc.
The director of engineering is recognized as an expert within the
organization, responsible for the successful implementation and utilization of
standardized programs across the HCA Healthcare enterprise. Areas of
responsibility include, but are not limited to, regulatory and accreditation
compliance, including The Joint Commission, and environmental compliance. This
position is responsible for management, direction, reporting, and measurement
of the HCA Continual Survey Readiness Evaluation (CSRE) for the operational
support, consultation, and guidance to all HCA Healthcare hospitals and
ambulatory surgery centers in meeting life safety and environment of care
regulatory and accreditation requirements.
This position requires up to 75% travel.
Major Responsibilities:
oResponsible for the assessment, planning, coordination and development of
education programs pertaining to TJC as they relate to Environment of Care and
Life Safety, National Fire Protection Association code compliance, Facilities
Guidelines Institute (FGI) compliance, heating/cooling and ventilation code
compliance, etc.
oServes as subject matter expert for CMS and TJC Life Safety and Environment
of Care compliance
oWorks in an advisory capacity for facility directors for all regulatory
compliance as it pertains to facility infrastructure compliance
oAssists facilities with the preparation for CMS and TJC surveys and provides
support when a facility receives an adverse decision and/or condition-level
finding during external survey process
oConducts ongoing research to remain current with regulatory requirements from
CMS, TJC, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Occupational Safety and
Health Agency (OSHA) and others
•Collaborates as a crosscutting function across multiples corporate teams,
committees, and projects as a forward-facing leader of Regulatory and
Accreditation Services to ensure enterprise work products are compliant with
external regulatory and accreditation requirements
•Drives enterprise wide regulatory and accreditation compliance and
performance based on external metrics
•Role complements and provides guidance to division/regional director of
facility management and facility director of facility management quality or
director
oAssists in the implementation and successful utilization of facility
compliance programs
oEvaluates new standards, derives processes to implement changes in deeming
authority requirements
•Environmental Programs
oAssists in development and implementation of environmental programs, such as
water management
oResponsible for developing training programs for all HCA Healthcare personnel
in order to comply with all environmental regulations
oOrienting and training CSRE team members to environment of care and life
safety functions, as needed
oLeads trainees and peers to ensure accurate production of CSRE metrics for
senior HCA Healthcare executives and board members based on the analysis of
facility data and interpretation of cumulative data trends throughout the
enterprise
Education & Experience:
•Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of experience in a relevant work environment
(Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience)
•Licensed Mechanical or Electrical Engineer (PE) strongly preferred Preferred
•Relevant certification in life safety, safety officer, engineering, fire
protection (e.g., CHSP, CLSS-HC, CFM, etc.) Required
•Extensive knowledge of mechanical systems present in acute care hospitals
including, but not limited to, HVAC systems, chiller plants, steam plants,
medical gas systems and building automation systems
•Extensive knowledge of electrical systems present in acute care hospitals
including, but not limited to, generator systems, automatic transfer switches,
paralleling gear and switch gear. Required
•Thorough knowledge of The Joint Commission (TJC), National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA), Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) and other
healthcare regulatory agencies requirements.
