Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the general supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services, the
Medical Laboratory Technician provides clinical laboratory services to
patients in accordance with accepted practices and Departmental and Hospital
standards of care.
What you will do in this role:

  • Assists in data collection for statistical surveys or other reports generated by the Department.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities within the Department.
  • Facilitates communication between the Laboratory and members of the Medical Staff and other Hospital Departments to enhance patient care services.
  • Notifies supervisor of any unusual requests to ensure maximum utilization of resources and maintenance of quality care.
  • Performs computer functions as necessary according to job duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles in the provision of diagnostic services.
  • Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles in the maintenance of instrumentation with a focus on maintenance of all quality controls.
  • Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles in the recording and reporting of testing results.
  • Utilizes specialized knowledge of clinical laboratory principles in performing general duties.
  • Bases decision-making on sound principles related to cost containment in the Department (i.e. does not waste reagents, supplies or controls).
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide clinical laboratory services to patients in relation to growth and development over their life span identifying their requirements relative to age-specific needs.
  • Utilizes appropriate principles in the provision of direct patient care services.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, physicians, personnel, and other personnel in the hospital to fulfill position responsibilities.
  • Prioritizes activities based on demands for service in collaboration with the Director of Laboratory Services or designee.
  • Maintains own professional growth through the utilization of professional organizations, in-services, workshops, seminars, and other self-directed learning activities.
  • Maintains awareness of current developments and trends in the provision of clinical laboratory services.
  • Maintains awareness of current Hospital and Departmental operational policies and procedures which impact on position responsibilities.
  • Alert to the detection of errors in own work with appropriate corrective actions initiated.
  • Ensures that problems/concerns regarding activities in the Laboratory are communicated with appropriate personnel.
# What qualifications you will need:

* Previous experience in hospital clinical laboratory preferred

  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) must be obtained within 1 year of employment start date
  • Associate Degree or equivalent military training
